As summer comes to an end and cooler weather approaches, fall is a great time to take a closer look around your home. A few repairs and maintenance items completed now can help prevent bigger—and more expensive—problems during winter.

Check Your Gutters and Exterior Drainage

Falling leaves can quickly clog gutters and downspouts, preventing water from draining properly. Make sure gutters are clean, securely attached, and downspouts direct water away from the foundation. Check the grading around your home for areas where water may collect.

Inspect Windows and Doors

Drafts around windows and doors can make your home less comfortable and increase heating costs. Inspect weather stripping, caulking, door sweeps, and exterior trim. Replacing deteriorated caulk or damaged weather stripping can make a noticeable difference once temperatures drop.
